What you will learn

The A1/A3 part follows the official EASA syllabus for the A1/A3 theory exam, in four modules:

  • Drone regulations: how the EU rules came about, the Open category, drones without a class mark, the A2 requirements, the remote pilot’s responsibilities, privacy and data protection, liability, incident reporting and security.

  • Air safety: dangerous goods, meteorology, the environment, how a drone works, flying over people, airspace classes and their risks, and the limits of human performance.

  • Flight procedures: what to check before, during and after every flight.

  • Mock exams: five full practice exams in the format of the official test, plus a final exam to check you are ready.

The A2 part follows the official EASA syllabus for the A2 theory exam:

  • Weather: how the environment shapes the weather, wind, temperature, visibility, air density and reading a forecast.

  • Drone performance: drone anatomy, safety functions, batteries, signal interference, the flight envelope and how payloads change performance.

  • Managing ground risk: the 1:1 rule, judging distances, low-speed mode and other flight modes, and the main ground risks.

  • Mock exam and final exam in the format of the official test.

The STS part follows the official EASA syllabus for the STS theory exam:

  • Regulations: the standard scenarios STS-01 and STS-02, the Specific category and general UAS knowledge.

  • Human performance and operations: the limits of human performance and the operational procedures for planning and flying.

  • Weather: wind, temperature and reading a forecast.

Frequently asked questions

Does this course give me the A1/A3, A2 and STS certificates?

No. The course prepares you for the three official theory exams. The certificates are issued by the aviation authority of the country where you take each exam, and inside the course you will find the link to every EASA country’s official exam. To fly under STS-01 or STS-02 you also need practical skills training and assessment.

In which order should I study?

Start with the A1/A3 part: you need the A1/A3 certificate before you can sit the A2 and STS exams. Then continue with the A2 part and finish with the STS part.

What do I need before the A2 exam?

An A1/A3 certificate and a declaration that you have completed the practical self-training under A3 conditions. The course includes a guide to that self-training.

What does the A2 allow me to do?

Fly C2 class drones closer to people: down to 30 metres from uninvolved people, or 5 metres with low-speed mode on.

Who needs the STS?

Pilots flying C5 drones under STS-01 (in visual line of sight, including urban areas over a controlled ground area) or C6 drones under STS-02 (beyond visual line of sight in sparsely populated areas).

Is the practical training included?

No. The course price covers the online theory only. The practical training is optional and is agreed separately, at its own price.

Are the certificates valid in other countries?

Yes. A1/A3, A2 and STS certificates issued by any EASA authority are valid in all 31 EASA countries.

Do I need my own drone?

Not for the online course. For the practical self-training required by the A2, you will need to fly a drone.

Do I need the A1/A3 for a drone under 250 g?

Yes, if it has a camera. Only toy drones without a camera are exempt.

How long does the course take?

About 8.5 hours including the mock exams, at your own pace.

How long do I have access?

Lifetime access, so you can review the content again when you renew your certificate.

How much do the official exams cost?

It depends on the country, and EU Drone Port does not set the fees. The A1/A3 and A2 exams are free in Spain, and you can take them there whatever your nationality.
